Things to do on your way to Islamorada

The Drive to Islamorada
Whether you arrive in Fort Lauderdale (FLL) or Miami (MIA), the journey to Islamorada is a beautiful introduction to the Florida Keys. From either airport, the drive typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic.

Leaving the airport, you’ll pass through the city and suburbs before reaching US-1 South (the Overseas Highway)—the only road connecting the Keys. As you head farther south, the scenery quickly changes: the skyline fades away and palm trees, turquoise waters, and small coastal towns begin to appear.

Pro Tips Along the Way:

Stock up before the Keys: Many visitors stop at Walmart in Florida City (just before entering the Keys) for essentials, snacks, or beverages. *If you are brave enough for a Super Walmart!

Publix in Islamorada: If you’d rather wait, there’s a Publix right in Islamorada—perfect for grabbing groceries once you arrive.

Scenic Food Stops: Break up the drive with a waterfront meal at popular spots like Gilbert’s Resort (Key Largo), Skipper’s Dockside (Key Largo), or Snook’s Bayside (Key Largo). All three offer classic Keys vibes, fresh seafood, and tropical drinks with beautiful views. Check out Key Largo Chocolates & Ice Cream for something sweet!

Islamorada Brewery & Distillery

This place is so fun! Food truck, brewery, distillery, and a beer garden!

Kaiyo Grill & Sushi

Best fusion cuisine in the Keys that offers a unique blend of Island-Asian food.

Green Turtle Inn

Will and Michaela like the sports bar vibe here. They also offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This is a popular spot to locals.
